In this blog post, we’ll share some helpful facts and tips about growing Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ in your garden designs.
1. Understanding Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’
Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ typically grows up to 60cm (24”) tall and 45cm (18”) wide and is an herbaceous perennial (meaning that it completely dies down in the late autumn and grows back in spring). Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ is a popular plant that is widely used in garden designs because of its beautiful clusters of pink flowers that bloom in late summer through fall. This plant is also known as Hylotelephium 'Herbstfreude' and belongs to the Stonecrop family, which is known for its drought-tolerant and low maintenance qualities. It has succulent-like stems and leaves that store water, making it a drought-tolerant plant. Its flowers are star-shaped and range in color from light pink to deep rose, which adds a pop of color to any garden design. It’s also known for its long-lasting blooms, which can last up to 6-8 weeks and really show off their colours in late summer and autumn. Understanding the characteristics of Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ is the first step in using it effectively in your garden design.

2. Choosing the Right Growing Conditions
Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. It’s a tough plant that can grow in many soil types, including sandy, rocky, or clay soil. In areas where there tends to be more rain or you are placing it in a part of the garden where other plants need more frequent watering, it’s essential to make sure that the soil doesn’t stay too wet, which can cause root rot. Incorporating a handful of small bits of gravel or mixing some sand into the soil where you will plant the sedums will help in allowing excess water to drain away from the roots. If you’re planting Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ in a container, make sure it has drainage holes and use a well-draining soil mix (such as a prepared Cactus / Succulent Potting Mix you can find at a garden centre or hardware store). Placing the plant in areas that receive full sun for longer parts of the day in cooler climates will ensure that the plants begin to regrow early in the season and will have more time to grow large and produce abundant flower heads. Providing the right growing conditions will ensure that your Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ will thrive in your garden design.
Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ makes a terrific plant for planting en masse in borders and complementing other tall perennial flowers.
3. Companion Planting with Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’
Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ is a versatile plant that can be used in many garden designs. One of the best ways to use Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ in your garden design is to companion plant it with other plants that complement the sedum’s uniquely textured leaves and flowers. For a dry garden, you might find it useful to plant amongst plants of varying heights, with groundcovers such as Pigface, Blue Chalksticks or Ice Plant and larger/taller plants such as cactus, aloe and Jade Plant.

Pairing it with ornamental grasses, such as Lomandra, Miscanthus or Pennisetum which will provide a contrasting texture and height.

4. Maintenance and Pruning
Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ is a low maintenance plant that requires minimal care. However, it’s essential to keep the plant tidy by removing any dead or damaged stems or leaves. I have found that while they don’t get fully attacked by snails and slugs, it seems like the creatures like to take a nibble every once in a while. The damaged leaves can start to brown and rot so it’s best to pull off the damaged leaves when this occurs. If you’re in a warmer area where Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ doesn’t die down in the winter, the best time to prune Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ is in early spring before new growth appears. You can also cut it back by half in early summer to encourage bushier growth and prevent it from flopping over. Regular deadheading will also help to promote more blooms and keep the plant looking tidy. In cool climates the plant will die down in late autumn / early winter- you can simply cut off the dead, withered stalks to make them look tidier for the winter.

5. Propagation
Propagating Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ is easy and can be done by stem or leaf cuttings or division. The best time to do this is in early spring or late summer when the plant isn’t in bloom. To propagate by division, dig up the entire plant and carefully separate the individual rosettes. Replant each rosette in well-draining soil and water thoroughly. Placing them in a partly-sun areas after propagation will ensure that the plants don’t dry out in the period it takes for the plant to put out new roots and become established. Once they’ve put out enough roots the plant will happily grow in full sun. Propagating Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ is a great way to expand your garden or share it with friends and family.
Conclusion
Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ is a wonderful plant that can add beauty and interest to your garden designs. Understanding its characteristics and growing requirements, companion planting with other plants, and proper maintenance and propagation will ensure that your Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’ will thrive in your garden.
