UNDERSTANDING GARDEN DESIGN

Garden Themes

A garden theme in landscape design can be used as sort of a shorthand for landscape elements or plants that reflect certain styles that are commonly referred to in design. Cottage Gardens, Formal, Native, Japanese, Tropical/Resort, Xeriscape/Dry Gardens are all common themes that can provide some guidelines for what you might want. Garden themes can be important considerations because they can help to tie in the architectural style of a house with the surrounding landscape and can be considered when trying to avoid clashing styles.

Plant Knowledge

A big part of knowing how your garden will look in the short, medium and long term future is understanding how plants grow and relate to one another. As time moves on, the garden constantly changes as plants mature and change shape and this creates an ever evolving space around you.

Whether you live in Sydney, on the coast or in the Blue Mountains and the style of garden you want is a formal garden, a cottage garden filled with flowers or one filled with Australian natives, NEW TERRAIN LANDSCAPE DESIGN’S knowledge of plants will ensure that the right plant will fit the right spot.

Water Use and Conservation

Water use is a major issue in the Australian landscape. Understanding the relationship water will have with your site can play a huge part in the long term success of your garden.

Some soils like those with high sand content can have difficulty retaining water long enough for thirsty plants to have access to enough water. Clay soils can be the opposite- absorbing so much water that soils become water logged and create hostile conditions for the roots of many plants. Knowing what kind of soils you have and what kind of plants you want to grow can help determine efficient water use and long-term plant health and success.

From improving soil drainage to creating raingardens to selecting water-wise plants in a garden, NEW TERRAIN LANDSCAPE DESIGN seeks sustainable solutions to designing gardens and landscapes that work with our challenging environment.

Microclimates

Landscapes and gardens, big and small, can have zones where the amount of moisture, sun, shade and nutrients available in the soil can vary wildly throughout the day and year. An area of one part of the garden might have considerably different soil, sun aspect and water access to another part of the garden a few metres away. These unique areas in a landscape are called microclimates and understanding the microclimates unique to your landscape can make or break the success of your landscape design and the health of your plants.

NEW TERRAIN LANDSCAPE DESIGN’S holistic approach to creating a successful landscape design assesses your microclimates and considers solutions that would provide a successful garden design.

Working with Natives

We love incorporating Australian native plants into our garden designs. Aside from exhibiting a wonderful array of colours and textures, they have a number of features that make them great to work with in a landscape design. While it’s a misconception that natives are plant-and-forget specimens, Australian native plants can more be more readily adapted to the challenging soil and climate conditions of Australia than exotic species. Natives can also be used to bolster our fragile communities of native insects, flora and fauna.

Depending on where you live, Council may require some or all of the plants you intend to plant in your garden to be plants native to Australia. The huge variety and availability of gorgeous Australian natives now available at nurseries means that an Australian native garden doesn’t have to look like a dry bush garden anymore.
